Laying the foundations for success

Phil's good at design as much as anything. He's got lots of good ideas about how to make things work - Rob Janaway, Newlyns Farm
Newlyns Farm has been in Rob Janaway's family for four generations. Set on 500 acres of land in the Hampshire countryside, Newlyns produces pork, lamb, beef and poultry. With two award-winning farm shops, a cafe and even a range of cookery classes, Newlyns is a successful business founded on a family's knowledge and experience of farming.
Working together for 12 years
As Janaway explains, the farm's relationship with Philip Eaton stretches back some time. "We started working with Phil about 12 years ago, buying different supplies. Over the years, he has built a couple of pig sheds, two farm shop buildings and renovated a cattle shed for us."
Newlyns has turned to Philip Eaton both for assistance with large projects – like the steel framed barns that house the farm's shops – and for smaller pieces of work, such as the specialist cattle feed equipment that Eaton designed and installed for the farm.
A long relationship
"It's a really long term relationship," confirms Janaway, suggesting that he holds Philip Eaton's services and expertise in high regard. "Phil's good at design as much as anything. He's got lots of good ideas about how to make things work, rather than being a big shed manufacturer who just knocks buildings together."
"He's been able to design buildings that suit my ideas," he confirms, stressing that Eaton always takes the time to listen to Newlyns' specific requirements, rather than simply providing standard options.
Providing value too
Although Newlyns values Philip Eaton's services, the farm also recognises the need to search out value. However, despite inviting bids for new projects, Janaway admits he's almost inevitably ended up commissioning Philip Eaton to do the work.
"We've always gone out to tender," Janaway explains, "and Phil's always been competitive and delivered when he said he's going to."
Maybe that's one of the biggest tests for a supplier in this field. An understanding of the client's needs and great service aren't enough. You need to provide excellent value too. With Newlyns, it seems Philip Eaton has succeeded on all three counts.
